Coastal Engineering

Coastal engineering requires understanding the interactions of oceanic forces, storm events, coastal geology, and benthic environments.  Sea Engineering, Inc. has been providing coastal engineering services throughout the Pacific Basin since 1973.  Projects have included beach erosion and coastal processes studies; coastal planning; beach nourishment design; dredging planning and analysis; design and evaluation of coastal structures; fiber optic cable and pipeline route site selection and design; harbor planning and navigation; storm inundation analysis; and sea level rise analysis.  Our team also provides coastal permitting services to assist with the maintenance of existing structures or new engineering solutions.  As leaders of their field, Sea Engineering’s scientists and engineers bring in-depth knowledge, expertise, and experience to projects, delivering coastal and ocean engineering solutions to their clients.  Our staff has completed projects globally for both private clients and government agencies.

Hydrographic and Geophysical Surveys

Sea Engineering offers a full range of hydrographic and geophysical survey services, including multibeam and single beam bathymetry, side scan sonar, subbottom profiling, and magnetometer surveys. Projects include harbor dredging surveys, seafloor benthic mapping, fiber optic cable route surveys, pipeline and outfall route selection, magnetic anomaly detection, downed aircraft and lost anchor recovery, seafloor imaging, sand deposit investigations, and general site assessments. Surveys have been successfully completed around the world including remote locations such as Madagascar, Martinque, Fiji, Barbados, Kiritimati, Midway Atoll, Palau and Samoa as well as throughout the Hawaiian Islands and Continental U.S.

Oceanographic and Marine Environmental Services

Sea Engineering provides a wide variety of oceanographic and marine environmental services combining our expertise in instrument deployment, diving, data processing, numerical analysis and modeling, and site assessment and mapping. With over 40 years of experience in state-of-the-science instrumentation, analysis, and modelling techniques our team can conduct all aspects of field and modelling studies from the coast to the ocean. With the capability to quickly deploy a full suite of in-house instrumentation, our team provides turn key solutions that take projects from initial site investigation to final assessments. Our team has provided efficient and customized engineering and science solutions for clients’ projects nationwide and throughout the Pacific Basin in challenging marine and coastal working environments.

In addition, the Sea Engineering team can provide permitting and environmental review services for our marine and coastal projects.

Underwater Inspection

Sea Engineering has been conducting underwater inspections of offshore and waterfront facilities including single point oil moorings, piers and wharves, bridges, pipelines and fiber optic cables since the 1990s.  Clients include the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Coast Guard, State of Hawaii, City and County of Honolulu, California Department of Transportation, Port of San Francisco, Port of Los Angeles, Port of Long Beach, City of Monterey, City of Berkeley, Santa Cruz Harbor, as well as numerous other public and private clients.

We are a General Member of the Association of Diving Contractors International and we adhere to either the ADCI consensus standards for diving operations or the standards defined in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Safety and Health Requirements Manual, EM 385-1-1.

In both Hawaii and California, we have complete dive lockers that include diver’s air supply systems,  handheld and real-time video and still cameras, hydraulic power packs and tools, and recompression chambers.  We employ a number of advanced, innovative techniques to provide quality inspection products.   Additional inspection capabilities include Remotely Operated Vehicles, various ultrasonic and acoustic technologies, single and multibeam sonar systems, side scan sonar, sub-bottom profiling, and centimeter level differential and RTK GPS navigation and positioning.

Sea Engineering also provides underwater inspections led by a professional engineer-diver, in accordance with American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recommendations and California State Lands Commission (CSLC) Marine Oil Terminal Engineering Standards (MOTEMS).  SEI’s waterfront and underwater construction knowledge allows close collaboration with engineers to provide buildable, economical solutions to oceanographic and waterfront projects.

Commercial Diving & Underwater Construction

Sea Engineering, Inc. has been providing offshore and inland diving services since 1986 and is one of the most recognized and sought after diving companies in the Pacific. Our dive team supervisors have over 30 years of commercial diving experience and dive teams include ADC commercial divers and P.E. engineer-divers.

Diving services are backed by vessels ranging from seventeen to eight-four feet, include built-in dive stations and Nitrox capability on the larger vessels. Dive trailers provide mobile dive stations which allow SEI to provide dive operations throughout Hawaii, the Pacific and Mainland U.S.

Sea Engineering’s dive division offers 24-hour services with professional and industry leading results. Sea Engineering is committed to maintaining a strong safety program and is proud of their no-accident record since beginning diving operations.

Waterfront Construction

Sea Engineering has been a licensed general contractor in Hawai’i since 1986. The construction division of the company specializes in waterfront construction, including harbor and concrete rehabilitation.

Concrete Repair and Restoration

  • Structural repairs using two-part epoxy injection techniques and localized quick-setting concrete patch repair.
  • Repair of broken and leaking concrete canal lining by installation and pumping of large mattresses to seal and cover damage.
  • Repair of voids, cracks and spalls in concrete, subsidence, mechanical damage, failed concrete and structural rebar corrosion on sea walls, bulkheads and other submarine structures
  • Concrete encapsulation of piles under piers, wharves, and bridges using tubular steel or nylon bag forms.

Structural Repair and Demolition

  • Dry-dock structure rehabilitation including slide gate, track and seal, manual operator and support guide repair/replacement
  • Repairs, modification to and replacement of trash-rack and debris screen structures
  • Temporary and permanent plugging of abandoned pipelines, tunnels and manhole structures.
  • Repair and maintenance of mechanical supports on pipelines, outfalls and intake/discharge lines.
  • Repair of mechanical structures in industrial and sanitary treatment plant process tanks, basins, ponds, vaults and pipelines.
  • Repair and modifications to diffuser ports, aeration systems, and discharge pipelines.
  • Design, repair and construction of boat ramps, floating docks and walkways, water access platforms and steps
  • Installation of anti-scour mat around exposed or unsupported pipeline spans for protection of bridge piers, footings, and other submarine structures
  • Scour and erosion control of bridge piers and sea walls with anchored submarine placement of concrete-filled mattresses.

Emergency Response and Salvage

Sea Engineering, Inc. maintains oil, fuel spill and salvage gear to provide emergency oil and fuel response, derelict vessel removal and salvage of sunken vessels. Through a partnership with Global Diving and Salvage, Sea Engineering, Inc. provides emergency response and salvage solutions to the United States Coast Guard through a District 14 Basic Ordering Agreement.

Remote Operated Vehicles and Unmanned Aerial System

Sea Engineering, Inc. maintains and operates two remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to support marine operations throughout the Hawaiian Islands.  The Seamoor Chinook inspection ROV is an industrial-grade ROV with the capability to dive to 300 meters of water depth. The Chinook’s compact profile and 120-volt power requirement allow for fast mobilization onto smaller vessels of opportunity.

Sea Engineering also maintains and operates a Forum SuperMohawk light work class ROV.  The SuperMohawk is outfitted with dual 5-function manipulator arms, an anvil cutter, scanning sonar, and high definition cameras.

Both ROVs support Sea Engineering’s oceanographic, renewable energy, commercial diving and salvage, and underwater construction projects.

Offshore Renewable Energy

Hawaii’s unique location in the world provides many of the desirable renewable energy sources and facilities necessary to make it a leader in the renewable energy field.  Sea Engineering, Inc. combines their expertise in ocean engineering, marine construction and commercial diving to support marine renewable energy projects in Hawaii and throughout the Pacific.  Sea Engineering’s efforts have ranged from site assessments and energy resource studies to Wave Energy Conversion device installation and support.  Sea Engineering has provided engineering, diving and construction support for the design and construction of the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base Wave Energy Test Site.

Vessel Services

Sea Engineering maintains a fleet of workboats ranging from 17 to 84 feet in length. Our vessels support our wide range of services including salvage and emergency response, hydrographic and geophysical surveys, construction and diving operations, and are also available for charter. Our main support vessels are the 84-foot Kupaa,  74-foot Huki Pau and 43-foot Huki Pono out of Hawaii.
