Wreck Removal – Sky Sun

The 68-foot fishing vessel SKY SUN, loaded with 3,000 gallons of diesel and 4-tons of fish, ran aground in Kapoho, Hawaii, the eastern shore of the Big Island, located near the southern end of the Waiopae Tidepools Marine Life Conservation District. (http://www.incidentnews.gov/incident/6033).

Sea Engineering, Inc. removed the steel longliner in an environmentally sound way to minimize any further environmental damage to the Marine Life Conservation District. Ocean removal was eliminated due to environmental concerns, and the location was 1 mile from the nearest road, presenting a challenge for the vessel salvage. SEI determined the best method for salvage was to cut the vessel into approximately 1,000 pieces and airlift them by helicopter to a disposal site onshore.
