Hunters Point Naval Shipyard is a former Navy installation located on a peninsula in the South San Francisco Bay. The facility was closed in 1991 under the Defense Base Realignment and Closure Act of 1990 (BRAC) and is in the process of conversion to non-military use. Historical site activities at HPS resulted in the release of chemicals to the environment, including offshore sediments. Environmental restoration activities are being conducted in accordance with the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA) as amended by the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA).

During the Pre-Feasibility Study (FS) phase of the restoration activities, Sea Engineering, Inc. (SEI) personnel teamed with Battelle Memorial Institute to develop an FS workplan and conduct sediment and contaminant transport studies. The studies included coring to determine sediment erosion rates, modeling of sediment transport potential, and modeling of long-term contaminant transport. In conjunction with previous work conducted by SEI in the Validation Study, the analysis was used in a ‘weight of evidence’ framework to determine the potential for sediment and contaminant transport under typical and extreme site conditions. Ultimately, the data is being used in evaluating the most efficient remedial design for the site (FS).
